ZFS - Structure - Datasets

A ZFS dataset is roughly analogous to a standard, mounted filesystem—like a conventional filesystem.

• Each ZFS dataset has its own set of underlying properties.
• A dataset may have a quota assigned to it.
  • In addition to datasets, ZFS also supports zvols.
  • A zvol is roughly analogous to a dataset, except it does not actually have a filesystem in it. It is just a block device.
